“Reunion Surf Bar Opens”

If you can’t book a trip to the beaches of Hawaii or the Bahamas, New York can still offer you a taste of the surfer life. Seriously. There are a slew of beach/surf/tiki-theme bars all over the city these days. Reunion Surf Bar in Midtown is the latest.

Partners Thomas Wilson and Eugene Ash (formerly of Mas farmhouse) joined Robert Guarino (Marseille and 5 Napkin Burger) in opening Reunion, which is named after the French island located off the coast of Madagascar and is known as the Frenchman’s Hawaii.

You can order a Mai Tai or Dark and Stormy as easily as a “frozen Corona” from the servers, who wear board shorts and skully hats. On the food menu, “surfer fare” like shark fry tacos, short board ribs, beach fire mahi mahi and the signature Le Americian (a traditional Reunionaisse surf sandwich consisting of a hollowed out baguette stuffed with Chinese meatballs, French fries, caramelized onions and melted Gruyere cheese!).

The space is decorated with a “beach shack chic” sensibility — vintage surfboards, beach-weathered wood and a wall-size aquarium. And when you’re ready to leave, you can even pay in Euros. Enjoy!

Reunion Surf Bar is located at 630 Ninth Ave. (at 44th Street), 212-582-3200, www.reunionbar.com.
