“Irving Farm Opens on UWS”

Perhaps some of you know of 71 Irving, the café in Gramercy Park. It’s a neighborhood spot where folks gather for coffee and scones in the mornings, soups and sandwiches at lunch, and wine, beer, and cheese at night. The food is great, the coffee’s strong and rich, and it’s truly a place where everyone knows your name. I spent ten years living just a few blocks away and was a constant fixture at the shop. As a result, I met some wonderful friends, and even the man I would marry. So, as you might imagine, the place holds a special place in my heart.

The guys (Steve Leven and Dave Elwell) have grown up a lot since their early days when the coffee shop just sold just good coffee and accompaniments. They now source and roast their own coffee at their Millerton farm, and have another café in the West Village. Now they’ve just opened a café on the Irving Farm's new cafe on the Upper West Side on 79th Street.

The space was designed by LevenBetts with wood varietals local to upstate NY where Irving Farm's roasting facility is located. The main service bar leads to a light, enclosed garden space in the back of the cafe where a seating area is framed by a wall size mural of an El Salvadorian coffee plantation. The image was actually taken by their VP of Wholesale & Green Coffee Buyer (fancy title which means, he runs all things coffee from sourcing to cup) Dan Streetman.

The cafe, of course, features their thoughtfully sourced, craft-roasted single origin and blended coffees and espresso as well as a rotation of craft beers (Sixpoint and Ommegang are on tap at the moment) and a wine list. The menu features local charcuterie, salumi & cheeses, fresh overstuffed sandwiches on Balthazar bread, grilled Panini, salads and fresh baked goods, including a killer cheddar chive biscuit made in house.

Irving Farm UWS is located at 224 West 79th Street, 212-874-7979.
