“Shanghai Nights at Salon de Ning”

The Pen-Top Bar, a place I drank many a cocktail during my term as a summer associate (way back when), is no longer. In its place, on May 16th, the Peninsula Hotel will unveil Salon de Ning, a rooftop bar and lounge inspired by the tale of Madame Ning, a celebrated Shanghai socialite.

Decorated with Moroccan lanterns, and Chinese lattice screens, the lounge is meant to evoke the glamour of Shanghai in the 1930s. The space features an intimate interior bar and two outdoor terraces (that can seat up to 250 guests in case you’re planning a fete of some sort) with Chinese-style day beds (for napping and admiring the views of the city), as well as cocktail tables and larger tables for big groups. A menu of light bar food will be served alongside champagne, wine and cocktails like the "Ning Sling"’—Absolut Mandarin, Soho French Lychee and fresh mint leaves shaken with lychee and passion fruit juice.

Salon de Ning is located on the 23rd floor of The Peninsula Hotel at 700 Fifth Avenue, corner of 55th Street , 212-956-2888. It opens May 16th.
