“The Tasting Hour at Japonais Starts Tomorrow”
I’d never use the term Deathwatch, but somehow I feel like once Eater gets a hold of this press release announcing the new “Tasting Hour” at Japonais, this place is going to have those bloody red letters slashed across it quicker than you can say “desperate times call for desperate measures.” In any case, this special menu is a really good deal if you’re into saving some cash and drinking really good cocktails for just $4 each.
Beginning tomorrow, Japonais will launch “The Tasting Hour,” a special 5pm-7pm discounted drinking and dining menu that definitely qualifies as a Happy Hour (or two). Sake Martinis and beers are just $4 each, pairs of sushi rolls and lobster spring rolls are $7 each, as are appetizers like Japonais fried rice (choice of chicken or shiitake mushroom), Tokyo Drums—spicy teriyaki drummettes with roasted scallion dipping sauce, and Sweet and Sour Calamari—fried calamari in a sweet and sour sauce with wasabi vinaigrette. The menu also includes a list of $8-$12 signature sandwiches, including the Tuna Pastrami Sandwich, and the Japonais Burger, typically only offered on the lunch menu.
Japonais is located at 111 E. 18th Street, between Park Ave South and Irving Place.

You shouldn't decend to the low levels of eater and use the term Deathwatch: neither in jest nor in earnest. It does a disservice to all those working hard in the business to figure out their place in the market and survive in the most difficult market in the nation. It can be a self fulfilling prophecy and there is no reason for people to engage in schaden freude at others expense.
