“La Superior”
The festive spirit of Mexico City is captured at La Superior a new cantina owned by M.C. native Felipe Mendez whose vision was to create a sweet and coloroful neighborhood joint with a menu of “comida corrida y callejera”—Mexican diner and street food. Chef Macxitl Gaxiola has moved to New York from Mexico City to execute Felipe’s menu of cheap and delicious eats.
Bring a mess of friends and start with flautas filled with potatoes and chicken ($5), or gorditas stuffed with potatoes and Mexican chorizo ($4), and add an order of guac ($5) and any of the tacos ($2.50 each, filled with carnitas, carne, pollo, pescado, etc). Follow up with a torta ahogada ($7) a Guadalajara special stuffed with carnitas and beans, and slathered with hot sauce and then griddled on sourdough bread, or a plate of homestyle enchiladas suizas ($10), or “pollo encacahuatado—chicken with mole peanut sauce, and a side of ezquites—cups of corn kernels with Mexican mayo, cheese and lime ($4).
The place is BYOM (margarita) for now, but a fresh fruit juice bar makes the most refreshing aqua frescas. Check out more of the menu here.
La Superior is located at 295 Berry Street, btwn South 2nd & South 3rd, 718-388-5988.
