“Black Iron Burger Shop”
Jason Hennings (E.U. and Diablo Royale) and his good friend (and longtime Raoul’s barkeep) Frank Ennis have opened Black Iron Burger Shop, a workingman’s pub and burger hall designed by Hennings and equipped with a long food bar (with lots of stools), hightop tables, raw rafters, bare bulbs and exposed brick. (While Frank is an owner, he’s not giving up his gig at Raoul’s and will remain there.)
Since the burgers are the heart and soul of this blessedly affordable menu (fried pickled green tomatoes ($5), wedge salad ($5), patty melts ($8), and grilled cheeses ($6) round out the selections), Jason did the right thing and sourced his beef from meat-guru Pat La Frieda. The burgers are a blend of Pat’s short rib and chuck and Jason cooks them on a flat-top steel and chrome Keating Miraclean griddle—a heating beast that puts some serious sizzle on those burgers which are served tucked inside Orwasher’s buns and topped with your choice of cheddar, blue cheese, Swiss, chili, grilled onions, horseradish cheddar or bacon ($1.50 each). The signature Iron Horse Burger is a double patty with horseradish cheddar and grilled onions ($11). Fries ($4) are hand-cut from Long Island potatoes, and other sides include buttered corn ($4), baked beans ($3), and onion rings ($4).
Like any good burger joint, you can expect lots of suds on tap—ten to be precise, including Saratoga Lager, Southampton Secret Ale, Bluepoint Toasted Lager, Stoudts Pilsner, Wolavers Organic Ale, Six Points Brownstone, Magic Hat Hefeweisen, Victory Hop Devil, Delirium Tremens, and Radeberger Pilsner. If beer is not your thing, try a Strawberry, Chocolate, or Vanilla milkshake ($6 each).
Black Iron Burger opens tonight at 540 East 5th Street, 212-677-6067. Its hours of operation are Sun/Mon 11 am to 1am and Tuesday to Saturday 11am to 3 am.
