“An Ode to Piedmont Opens on Allen Street: Sorella”

Chef Emma Hearst, who cooked at Union Square Café, has opened her first restaurant, an ode to Piedmont and to her travels throughout Northern Italy called Sorella.

The restaurant and wine bar, which was formally the Mexican spot El Portal, was gutted and designed by Resistance (they are also working on revamping the 71 Clinton Space) and has a cool modern look marked by earth toned walls, smooth wooden tables and soft gray fabric covered seating.

Hearst’s appealing menu, which was inspired by Piemontese cooking, will feature small plates like risotto with golden Kuri squash fondue, robiola, hazelnuts, sage ($13), Pate de Fegato—duck fat english muffin bread, chicken liver, mousse, fried egg, bacon ($8), Pulled Hen & Veal Tongue Salad with creamy tuna sauce, beets, celery, poppyseeds ($12), Acciughe al Verde—Ligurian anchovies, with salsa verde, lemon butter, flatbread ($8) and Agnolotti with zested ricotta, walnut pesto, marjoram ($13). In addition, a two-course table d’hote menu will change nightly and platters of cured meats and Italian cheeses will also be served to compliment the wine list.

Sorella is open now (softly) and is located at 95 Allen Street, between Delancey and Broome, 212-274-9595 and will be open from 3pm-2am every day but Sunday.  Brunch to come soon.
