“Grayz Becomes Atria”

The former Grayz space has been transformed and will open as Atria on Thursday with a price promotion menu that will run through January (Lunch: $24.07; dinner: $35; 3-courses prix-fixe). The full menu, by chef Martin Brock (who worked under Kunz for many years and was Grayz' chef de cuisine), will debut on Monday, February 2. Returning to the way it was in the days of Aquavit, the main dining area at Atria will be downstairs in the lower level Atrium and salon, with the upstairs operating as a no-reservations bar and lounge. A significant modern art installation by Brooklyn-based artist, Shaun Acton includes seven “Scrollatropes,” large open circular sculptures, that hang from the ceiling in the Atrium (hopefully they are hung securely) and several other multimedia works on canvas will be showcased throughout the restaurant (more at http://www.shaunacton.com.)

Chef Brock’s current $35 prix fixe dinner menu ($24.07 at lunch) is a steal for this neighborhood and includes starters like cured sea trout with lotus root chips, sesame seeds and curry remoulade, butternut squash soup with toasted pumpkin seeds, cavatelli and chervil, and a hanger steak wrap with pickled cucumbers, sweet chili sauce and fingerling potato chips. Entrees include four choices: shellfish fricassee in a coconut brother with lemongrass, grilled arctic char with braised endive, jicama and blood orange, roast chicken breast with savoy cabbage, schupfnudeln and maple cider sauce and braised flatiron steak with riebele, Brussels sprouts and cabernet sauvignon juice. Caramel apples with walnut cider cake for dessert!Atria is located at 13-15 West 54th Street New York, NY 10019 (phone: 212-262-4600, http://www.atrianyc.com).
