“Defonte's of Brooklyn Coming to Gramercy Park”

Flo Fab had a great round up of new sandwich shops in the city yesterday in the Times, but she missed a very good one. Just in time to save you a trip to Red Hook for the city's best Super Bowl sandwiches, Defonte’s of Brooklyn (379 Columbia St, between Coles St & Luquer St, (718) 625-8052) is set to open a branch of their hero heaven in Manhattan at 261 Third Avenue @21st street, 212-614-1500.

Owner Nicky Defonte is an old school Deli man who’s been in the business all his life, making hot and cold sandwiches and his famous oversized (Longshoreman style) heroes since he inherited the business from his dad (his walk in dates to 1922).

On the menu at the Gramercy shop you’ll happily find all DeFonte's signatures (all made on fresh baked Italian bread with mozzarella made in house daily) like:

POTATOES & EGGS: with mozzarella 7.95 (this one has a cult following)

NICKY SPECIAL: Ham, capicola, salami, fried eggplant, provolone, hot salad, marinated mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, oil and vinegar 9.95

HOT ROAST BEEF: Roast beef, fresh mozzarella, fried eggplant, natural jus 9.75

THE DINO: Homemade Meatballs parmigiano 7.95

DEFONTE’S CUBAN: roast pork, Virginia ham, Swiss, pickles, garlic bread 9.95

SINATRA SPECIAL: steak pizzaiola, fresh mozzarella 9.95

Mangia!
