“Fatty Crab UWS Opens Wednesday”

Fans of Chili Crab, Short Rib Randang and Fatty Duck rejoice! Fatty Crab, Zak Pelaccio’s pocket-sized Malaysian street food joint is opening a second branch on the Upper West Side in a space that’s comparatively gargantuan (it’s seats 74 with 13 at the bar) but similar in décor with wooden chairs and tables, a central mural of Kuala Lampur and what are described as “slightly pornographic” bathrooms (I’ll let you be the judge of that).

The feisty menu, divined by Pelaccio and executed by chef Corwin Kave (his mom Rhonda owns Ronni Sue’s chocolates in the Essex Market), is larger than its Meatpacking sibling and includes signatures like Fatty Tea Sandwiches with pork belly and sambal ($9), chili crab (MP), Chicken Claypot with ginger, green chili, tofu ($14), Skate Panggang—grilled on a banana leaf with sambal udang kering ($14), and Short Rib Randang—braised with kafir lime, chili and coconut ($25), in addition to noodles and soups like Nasi Lemak—coconut rice with chicken curry and slow poached egg, and Lo Si Fun—Short rice noodles with Chinese sausage and shiitake mushrooms ($14). There’s no dessert menu, but you’ll still leave on a sweet note: everyone gets rice cakes on the house!

The fire-quenching cocktails ($12) on the menu have been crated by Allan Katz to sooth and cool your mouth from the spicy heat of your dinner. There’s The Fatty Sling—rum, pineapple juice, and ginger ale with bitters and Pernod, The Poona Club—Rangur lime gin with vermouth, blood orange juice and bitters and fresh coconut water mixed with strong Australian rum.

Fatty Crab UWS opens this Wednesday March 4th at 2170 Broadway at 77th Street, 212-496-2722.
