“The Crosby Street Hotel”

The newest addition to the Firmdale Hotels was born this past Monday, and it’s the first in the family to arrive as a US Citizen. These award winning boutique hotels have six other siblings in the family across the pond, including The Soho Hotel, Covent Garden Hotel, Haymarket Hotel, making The Crosby Street Hotel, lucky number seven, bringing a bit of British charm to the streets of Soho.

Tucked away on the cobblestone street, the 86 rooms in this elegant edifice are as spacious as they are cozy, with oversized signature headboards in each room and plenty of natural light gleaming from the city. Co-owner and Design Director, Kit Kemp has penetrated every last detail of each nook and cranny, having the hotel radiate a chic, but homey feeling with touches of pizzazz with color and contemporary art that brings an eccentric element that make you look twice. Its hard not to notice these quirky touches throughout the hotel, from an homage of Warhol-like images of the Royal Queen, that welcomes guests into the Crosby Street Bar, to the bright orange seats of the private screening room and the oversized sculpture or a human head made out of letters that resides pondering in the front lobby, it is clear that each hand-sourced item has been placed with an artistic eye.

The Crosby Street Bar is set intentionally inside of the hotel, as all of the luxe libations and menu items are creations of the hotel themselves, with “no big name chef attached.” Perhaps they are on to something here, drawing an even greater focus to the cocktail culture, which the English have never seemed to have a problem mastering. Some of these impressive cocktails include The Princess of Wales gives a beautiful tribute to the motherland with Rye whiskey, raspberry, maraschino liqueur, Rose water and brut Champagne, a refreshing Lavender Daisy contains Gin, lavender syrup, fresh lemon and lime, lavender flower, and amongst a list of Green Market Cocktails, the seasonal Spice Highball made with browned apple butter brandy, allspice dram, Spiced pear syrup and scrumpy makes me long for an endless autumn.

From a lush courtyard beside the restaurant that is still receiving finishing touches, succulent plants in each room (instead of fresh cut flowers), to the garden on the roof that is growing their own herbs and vegetables, The Crosby is going for the Gold… LEEDS status that is, to become one of the first hotels in New York to be completely Green. It seems that if their reputation can in fact follow them across the Atlantic, that they will reach this goal, amongst other successes, in record time.

The Crosby Street Bar is open all day for breakfast, lunch and dinner Entrance is located at 246 Lafayette. Crosby Hotel is located at 79 Crosby Street and is taking reservations on (212) 226-6400.
