Mexican Independance Day at Mercadito
New York isn’t renowned for its Mexican cuisine. And when it’s good, it’s not always cheap. Luckily, if you plan to celebrate the Mexican Independence Day this year, you’ve got three good options: Mercadito, Mercadito Grove and Mercadito Cantina.
The Sandoval brothers, restaurateur/owner Alfredo and chef/owner Patricio, offer more traditional items on the menus to entrees that take a spin on old-world recipes. You’ll find that the menus include fresh, tasty and cheap options.
At Mercadito on Tuesday, September 15 (Mexican Independence Day), a few specials will roll out of the kitchen for a $35 sharing menu. A ceviche de halibut with seasonal pears, spicy red peppers tomatillo pico de gallo and a tamarind chile piquin broth is one fancy appetizer. But it doesn’t end there. There’s a special botana that combines guajillo corn masa with black bean hash, chipotle shrimp-chorizo, cabbage, crema fresca cotija and chorizo verde. A taco with braised lamb marinated in a three chile sauce topped with pickled red onion and tomatillo salsa. A mariachi band will liven things up from 7 to 9:30 p.m. that night. If you can’t make it out on the 15th, a picadillo chile rellano will be available all month long for $20.50 here and Mercadito Grove. At Mercadito Cantina, they’ll serve up a chile relleno a la Mexicana with a poblano pepper stuffed with shrimp, pico de gallo, diced potatoes, a black bean puree and ancho-arbol salsa chile relleno ($15). Enjoy! The three locations are:
Mercadito (179 Avenue B between 11th and 12th Streets; 212-529-6490), Mercadito Grove (100 Seventh Avenue South at Grove Street; 212-647-0830), Mercadito Cantina (172 Avenue B between 10th and 11th Streets; 212-388-1750)
