“Fatty 'Cue”

I don't take the M train often. The last time I did, it was over two years ago to have dinner at Peter Luger's--that old bastion of steak in that sits like some sort of proud traif pariah on the edge of the Hasidic neighborhood of Williamsburg. But last night, there I was again, on a shiny clean M train. Only this time, my destination was not Peter Luger's. I was there for barbecue, sort of.

I rode the M train out of the blackness of the subway tunnel into the hazy dappled light of a summer day turning to a humid evening, rumbling over the Manhattan Bridge as cell phones chimed to life, and exited at Marcy Avenue, climbing down the stairs to Broadway where I searched for South 6th Street. There was South 8th to my left, and South 5th to my right but no South 6th Street. I asked a few folks idling on Broadway who appeared to fit in more than me. They had no idea. I turned on my iPhone and hit maps. The blue arrow pinpointed my location and showed me the way: Broadway, when taken to the end, just past Luger's, turned into South 6th Street. I was still unsure, but a few blocks into my journey, a breeze rifled the hot stale air, and I knew that I was going in the right direction. It was a faint whiff of smoke, a soft sweetness, a gentle note of something wonderful basting slowly in a cooker filled with hickory. Forget technology, I thought as I slid my iPhone back into my purse. My nose would be my guide. I followed the smoke past Luger's, like some cartoon character following its stomach, and past Velvet, where the smell of hickory was temporarily masked by a cloud of cigar smoke. But soon, I was back on the trail again. Ironically, I found my destination just past a shiny health club called SOMA. I should have walked straight into that gym and checked in for a week, but instead, I spent three hours in the mouth of indulgence-at Fatty ‘Cue-- drinking and eating (feasting really) ripping into hunks of smoky meats and fish (duck, pork, beef, and mackerel too, bones and all) and licking my chili-stained fingers clean of fresh pulpy lime juice and peppery fish sauce. What heaven.
